Understanding Optimal Lab Results for Better Health

Updated: Aug 6

The Importance of Optimal Ranges

When reviewing a person's lab results, I focus on the “optimal” range.

'Normal' does not equate to optimal.

The "normal" reference range represents a set of values, including upper and lower limits for a lab test, derived from a population of otherwise healthy individuals. These values can vary based on factors such as age, sex, and specimen type (e.g., blood, urine, spinal fluid). Additionally, "normal" ranges may differ across geographical areas.

Many individuals who feel unwell often have 'normal' blood test results; however, normal does not mean optimal. Blood markers might not yet indicate a diagnosable disease, but they can fall short of what is considered ideal or healthy.

In contrast to "normal” lab ranges that only exclude disease, optimal ranges are narrower and based on research and clinical findings.

Optimal ranges identify the ideal level of a particular biomarker for optimal health, providing a more detailed perspective on well-being, rather than merely labeling results as "normal" or "abnormal." This offers clients an early insight into potential diseases they may be at risk for while helping design a plan to enhance their health moving forward.

Identifying Patterns in Lab Results

I look for patterns; what recurs repeatedly when looking at each individual marker?

Some items I might observe include:

  • A need for Vitamin C

  • A need to support stomach acid production

  • A need for more protein

  • B12 or iron anemia

  • Dehydration

  • Adrenal fatigue

  • And much more

These observations can guide us in making informed decisions about your health.

The Role of Lab Analysis

Lab analysis is included in my client packages and is strongly recommended. Labs enhance my functional perspective by revealing new areas that require support or confirming my existing insights.

Understanding your lab results is crucial. It’s not just about numbers; it’s about what those numbers mean for your health journey.
